How do I chose a lawyer or firm?

1. What kind of lawyer do I need?

You need to look for an attorney that covers your type of case or issue.  When you interview a lawyer (and you should interview before you commit) ask about previous experience with your legal concern.  A general practice lawyer can easily take care of working up a living trust or helping with credit trouble.  However, you may want an attorney that specializes in your area of need.

2. How can I find the right lawyer?

Learn as much as you can about your legal issues. Once you identify the kind of attorney you are looking for, you can ask people you know for referrals, or check with the local bar association for recommendations.
Most business depend on referrals or recommendations, and a law firm is not different.  Talk to people you trust who have dealings with lawyers; small business owners, bankers, or friends.

Your local bar association may have a list of recommended attorneys by specialty.  They also may be able to give you a list of law offices that have free or discounted initial consultations.  They may be able to help you find a lawyer to do your case pro bono, or without charge, if you meet the guidelines.

After interviewing a few lawyers you decide by considering credentials, experience, fee structure and compatible personalities. Each person has special needs and preferences.  Gender may matter to you, or you might prefer a small firm vs. large firm (or the other way around).
Whatever you decide, make sure the attorney understands your case fully.
